Signs your root chakra may feel imbalanced

The root chakra — Muladhara in Sanskrit — is the first of the seven main energy centres in the body. Located at the base of the spine, it governs our sense of safety, belonging, groundedness, and survival. It is the foundation upon which all other chakras rest.

When the root chakra is open and balanced, we feel secure in ourselves and in the world. We trust that our needs will be met. We are able to be present, to take action, and to move through uncertainty without being overwhelmed by it. When it is out of balance, the opposite is true — and the effects ripple through every area of life.

Signs of an imbalanced root chakra

Emotional signs

  • Persistent anxiety or a constant sense of dread
  • Feeling unsafe, even in situations that are objectively safe
  • Difficulty trusting others or the world in general
  • A deep feeling of not belonging — to a place, a family, or a community
  • Fear around money, security, or the future
  • Inability to feel present; always living in the past or future

Physical signs

  • Tension or pain in the lower back, hips, or legs
  • Digestive issues or problems with the lower digestive tract
  • Feeling fatigued despite rest
  • Immune system imbalances
  • Feeling disconnected from your body

Behavioural signs

  • Hoarding or excessive attachment to possessions
  • Difficulty completing tasks or following through
  • Restlessness or an inability to settle
  • Over-reliance on routine as a way of managing anxiety
  • Feeling stuck, as though life is not moving forward

What causes root chakra imbalance?

The root chakra is shaped early in life, often before we have language for our experiences. Childhood experiences of instability — financial hardship, emotional unavailability from caregivers, frequent moves, loss, or trauma — can create deep imprints in this energy centre. These imprints do not disappear with time; they wait to be seen and healed.

Safety is not something the world gives us. It is something we learn to build within ourselves.

Ways to begin restoring balance

  • Spend time in nature — walk barefoot on grass or earth when possible
  • Grounding meditation: sit quietly and visualise roots extending from the base of your spine into the earth
  • Physical movement, especially yoga poses that engage the hips and legs (warrior poses, mountain pose, child's pose)
  • Eat nourishing, grounding foods — root vegetables, legumes, warm soups
  • Create small routines that give your nervous system a sense of predictability
  • Work with a therapist or healer on early experiences of insecurity or trauma
Even five minutes of sitting quietly with your feet flat on the floor, taking slow breaths, and repeating 'I am safe. I am here. I am grounded.' can begin to shift the root chakra over time.

Healing the root chakra is patient, gentle work. It asks you to meet the part of you that did not feel safe, and to offer it the stability it always deserved. That is the practice — not fixing, but returning home to yourself.
